FAQs

Anvil answers your important questions.

Q1: When did the sale of Grinnell Supply Sales & Manufacturing take place? Do you have any correspondence related to this information?

The distribution and manufacturing operations of the company formerly known as Grinnell Supply Sales, along with all the brands it manufactured, became Anvil International, Inc. in August 1999 when those operations were sold by Tyco International, but Tyco keeps the Grinnell® Trademark. Brands such as Gruvlok® grooved piping products, J.B. Smith™ forged steel fittings, Catawissa™ winged unions and valves, and others are now Anvil brands. Other familiar products formerly sold as Grinnell brands, such as hangers and supports, are now made and sold by Anvil. See the announcement for more information.

Grinnell® is a registered trademark of Grinnell Corporation, a Tyco International Ltd. company.

Q2: Why was the company name changed from Grinnell to Anvil?

Under the conditions of the sale, Tyco International retained the usage of the name “Grinnell.” This made it necessary to rename the company from Grinnell Supply Sales. One of the brands that we retained as part of the sale was “Anvil.” This name was already known within our customer base, and the name itself fit our image as a "solid, reliable manufacturer" so we adopted it for the entire operation. Anvil International still retains the rich history that dates back to the 1850s when Frederick Grinnell acquired the assets of the Providence Steam & Gas Pipe Co. (see timeline for more info.) Anvil continues to manufacture the same, superior quality products that the company made before Tyco sold it, including fittings, hangers, nipples, grooved piping products, valves, and pipe hangers and hardware for specific engineered applications. The same foundries and plants that manufactured these very products under the Grinnell name, now manufacture them under the Anvil name.

Q3: Will Anvil continue to make the products I used to purchase from it when it was known by the Grinnell name?

Anvil is committed to providing its customers with the products and service they have come to both expect and deserve. With the acquisitions of Merit Manufacturing, Beck Manufacturing, and Star Piping Products Building / Construction Division, Anvil is capable of offering a broader package of products and services for virtually any application involving pipe connections or supports. Especially for our flagship product lines — hangers and grooved piping system components — as well as for all our lines, we will continue to expand and improve our offering, and invest in our manufacturing capabilities.
